Port McNeill, B.C. Island District, Traffic Services
2017-12-14 14:54 PST
On December 14, 2017 at approximately 8 a.m., Port McNeill RCMP attended a serious motor vehicle collision on Highway 19, approximately 2 kilometres south of Beaver Cove Road.
Upon attendance, police determined that a southbound vehicle had allegedly driven into the rear of an empty logging truck which was stopped on the highway. Early indications are that the driver of the logging truck had stopped on the highway, activated his hazard lights and was awaiting to negotiate around an RCMP police officer who had pulled over a vehicle some distance ahead. It is believed that the RCMP vehicle had its emergency lights activated at the time.
The driver of the vehicle has been transported to hospital in critical condition while a female passenger was pronounced deceased at the scene. Two other passengers in the vehicle received minor injuries and the driver of the logging truck was not injured.
The highway is open to single lane alternating traffic. Motorists are encouraged to monitor the Drive BC website for updates regarding the highway closure and to observe the direction of flaggers at the scene.
Port McNeill RCMP, the North Vancouver Island Traffic Services, the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Enforcement and the Criminal Collision Investigation Team are investigating the fatal motor vehicle accident.
Anyone who has any information in relation to this incident is asked to contact North Vancouver Island Traffic Services at 250-286-5646.
