Fatal motor vehicle incident investigation underway in Burns Lake

Burns Lake, BC: On November 17, 2017, at approximately 4:03 pm, Burns Lake RCMP were notified that a pedestrian was walking down the centre of Hwy 35. At 4:35 pm, a second report was received that the pedestrian was wearing all black clothing while walking south bound on the south bound side of Hwy 35. Police attended and offered the pedestrian a ride. After the pedestrian declined and the attending police officers determined that he did not appear to be committing an offence, the pedestrian continued on his way.
At about 5:20 pm, Burns Lake RCMP were notified that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle in the 7200 block of Hwy 35. Upon attendance, police located a man who was receiving medical attention by BC Emergency Health Services. The 40-year-old man was transported to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
Burns Lake RCMP with support from the North District Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) are investigating the circumstances of this fatal crash.
As per protocols, IIO BC was notified and determined there was no nexus between the actions of police and the man's death.
